Bridging the Gap

Illustration of people and dogs in nature.

The action plan Bridging the Gap, approved by City Council in November 2018, aims to increase the number of preschool spaces.

The plan lasts until the end of 2026 and primarily involves the construction of new preschools, as well as extensions to older preschools, new preschool units, and an increase in the number of children in private preschools.

What changes?

In total, the plan involves opening numerous new preschools between 2018 and 2026 and increasing both the number of preschool units and extensions to existing preschools in Reykjavík.

Additionally, there will be a significant increase in spaces at private preschools.

Fossvogsblettur

The new Fossvogsblettur facility is one example of a preschool currently under construction. The single-story, flat-roofed preschool building sits at the eastern end of the lot. Its U-shaped layout opens to the west, creating a sheltered, quiet outdoor space that serves as the entrance courtyard.

The school will house 10 preschool units spread across three wings. Each unit features a main room, two group rooms, and a bathroom. These units share dining areas and open spaces.

The building will receive Swan certification.
