162 new preschool openings under development in Reykjavík

Preschool children on waiting lists

The City Executive Council today approved a major campaign to add 162 preschool openings in the city while also improving staff facilities at several preschools.

The City has been working for several years to add more preschool openings in Reykjavík while renovation and maintenance of the City's preschool facilities has been underway.

14 new classrooms

The Bridging the Gap project continues, and the City Executive Council today approved a major campaign to further expand preschool openings. The City will build 14 new classrooms at six preschools across the city, along with connecting buildings and site development work. The project will add 162 new preschool openings and improve staff facilities at several preschools.

The preschools are Grandaborg, Hólaborg, Árborg, Jörfi, Maríuborg and Vesturborg. The development will retire older and smaller classrooms, but the overall increase in preschool openings will still be significant.

Good working conditions are important

Adding preschool openings to meet family needs and create better working conditions for preschool staff is a top priority.

The total cost of the development is estimated at 2.1 billion króna, including 150 million for site development work. With the City Executive Council's approval, the City can begin the procurement procedure for the project.
