Klettaborg preschool expansion complete
The Klettaborg preschool expansion is complete, and the first children have started in the new building located west of Hamraskóli. The expansion adds more preschool openings in Grafarvogur.
Hiring on track
The lot, which is part of Sporhamrar, previously housed two daycare providers, but when they retired, plans were made to completely renovate and expand the building to add more preschool openings. The first phase includes enrolling 15 children in the coming weeks, and all 25 openings will be filled once the preschool is fully staffed. Recruitment is going well, with several employees already hired and some having started work, according to Helena Jónsdóttir, acting preschool director at Klettaborg.
New facility meets modern standards
"The acoustics are excellent inside the building, and very little noise comes through from the school grounds next door. The space is split into two divisions, and a multi-purpose room replaces the traditional hall and will serve as a shared gathering space for both Klettaborg buildings," Helena explains, adding that all rooms have radiant floor heating, partially automated lighting and a new, high-quality ventilation system.
New grounds offer space for play and learning
The facility also includes a satellite kitchen, a dedicated space for special education and flexible office space. The grounds, which are split into two areas, are well-designed and serve the entire preschool. One area is specially designed for younger children, while the larger area features an outdoor recreation area with a fire pit for gatherings. For instance, all children and teachers came together in December for an enjoyable Christmas celebration. There are also plans to add vegetable planter boxes this spring, which would enhance outdoor learning and environmental education at the preschool.
