Reduce carbon footprint - Implementation of green screens in primary schools

Description of the action and objectives

Green Deal action

Part of the collaborative project Awareness Raising on Climate Issues in Primary Schools is the Green Screens project. The mission is to design and develop the so-called Green Screens, information screens in primary schools that convey data, knowledge, and education about the school's specific environmental issues for everyone to read and interpret. Information is presented about the school's carbon emissions along with the underlying causes, such as electricity consumption, transport, and waste generation.
The benefits of the project are diverse but mainly aim at strengthening school children in data-driven environmental literacy and their ability to think about climate and environmental issues in a critical, informed, and clear way. Collaborators in the Green Screen Project include Reykjavík City, Klappir Green Solutions, the environmental organization Landvernd, Sorpa, Associated Icelandic Ports (Faxaflóahafnir), the Slovenian meter manufacturer Iskraemeco, and primary schools in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.

  Timing Progress description
  July 2023

The system has been opened to Reykjavík City employees, ensuring access to raw data. We've discontinued the plan to install green screens in schools, shifting our focus towards using tablets instead. A special interface for green screens is planned, with the project commencing once it receives funding. A conference/event for teachers on climate change issues was held in February, with participation from children and young people.

January 2023 The system has been opened to Reykjavík City employees, ensuring access to raw data. We've discontinued the plan to install green screens in schools, shifting our focus towards using tablets instead. We aim to design a specialized interface for green screens, yet this project hasn't started due to lack of funding. The project still has to be strategically introduced and implemented in primary schools.
July 2022 New implementation plan developed, approved, and launched. This is an ongoing project that will be in progress from 2022 to 2024. To monitor progress, a status assessment is made twice a year, at the end of the year and at the end of June.
