Description of the action and objectives
Green Deal action
The goal is to ensure all children, especially those belonging to minority groups, have a voice in democratic decision-making processes. Emphasis will be placed on giving children opportunities to express their views on decisions that affect them in school and recreational activities. Standards will be developed for choosing children for participation to ensure diversity.

Status report on January 1, 2024
Action completed. 26 workplaces at the Department of Education & Youth have completed the implementation of the Rights Respecting School/Rights Respecting After-School Program. Plans to add eight more workplaces in the 2023-2024 school year are in place. Six preschools are advanced in becoming Rights Respecting Preschools. Started strategic implementation and removed from the action plan of the Green Deal.

January 2023 | The implementation of Rights Respecting Schools and Rights Respecting After-School Programs started in five schools in the fall of 2022: Breiðagerðisskóli, Fossvogsskóli, Hvassaleitisskóli, Réttarholtsskóli, and Víkurskóli. The after-school programs Sólbúar, Neðstaland, and Krakkakot, as well as in Bústaðir and Tónabær youth centers. SP and SV are starting discussions on the next implementation with four schools, after-school programs and youth centers in Grafarvogur. Work is underway to develop educational material for preschools in collaboration with UNICEF and to start a project on implementing the Rights Respecting Preschools concept in collaboration with the Faculty of Education at the University of Iceland and multiple preschools. | |
July 2022 | New implementation plan developed, approved, and launched. This is an ongoing project that will be in progress from 2022 to 2024. To monitor progress, a status assessment is made twice a year, at the end of the year and at the end of June. |
