Neighborhood plans
Every established neighborhood in the city will get a specific neighborhood plan which outlines policies for housing changes, population growth, transportation, green spaces, and the enhancement of commerce and services in the neighborhoods.
Neighborhood plans are land-use plans for established neighborhoods that aim to foster sustainable, environmentally friendly neighborhood growth in response to evolving priorities. Making changes to their homes or lots will become simpler for residents with the introduction of neighborhood plans.

My property
The plan allows for extensive additions and alterations to residential buildings. It is also permissible in many areas to create accessory apartments within existing residences or in garages. This facilitates easier modifications for property owners and makes costly and time-consuming hearing notification procedures and land-use plan changes largely unnecessary.
To find out what changes you may make, you need to explore the conditions that apply to your property under the neighborhood plan.
Green initiatives
The neighborhood plan emphasizes the protection of vegetation and the bolstering of open spaces in the neighborhoods. Neighborhood gardens, playgrounds, and quiet areas are defined in all districts to encourage outdoor activities and improve public health. Consideration is also given to sorting of waste and effort made to reduce noise and air pollution within residential areas.
Quality public spaces strengthen community awareness and support sustainable travel behavior.
Instructions
With the neighborhood plan, there are guidelines that detail the provisions of the neighborhood plan and provide various useful information. These guidelines discuss a wide range of issues like additions, roof alterations, balconies, enclosing balconies, and other modifications to buildings, layout of lots, urban farming, and much more.
The neighborhood plan guidelines are an innovation in Icelandic planning matters and are included with all the neighborhood planning programs of the City. They are based on the policy framework of Reykjavík's Municipal Plan.
My neighborhood
The city is constantly evolving. A neighborhood plan aims to allow established neighborhoods to grow and adapt to changing priorities while preserving their unique traits and character.
This approach helps us look to the future while protecting the spirit of each community—the heartbeat of every neighborhood.
Eco-friendly transportation
There is a strong focus on improving conditions for eco-friendly transportation in the neighborhood plan and reducing disturbances from vehicular traffic. Increased use of eco-friendly modes of transport aligns with the goal of developing sustainable neighborhoods with more shopping and services in mixed and dense areas.
Neighborhood planning consultation process
The consultation process for developing a new neighborhood plan is fundamentally divided into six steps, following the planning process from the initial idea search to the approved plan.
