Neighborhood plan for Kjalarnes
Neighborhood plan for Kjalarnes
Work on the neighborhood plan for Grundarhverfi and surrounding areas will begin in 2025.
My property
In the process of working on the neighborhood plan, there will be an evaluation to determine if new permits should be issued for additions and alterations to existing buildings. The evaluation will also consider whether to allow accessory apartments within the current home or in the garage. With these neighborhood plan permits, residents can more easily modify their properties, making expensive and lengthy hearing notifications and local plan amendments mostly unnecessary.

Green initiatives
Grundarhverfi in Kjalarnes stands out among neighborhoods in Reykjavík. This is largely due to its strong connection to expansive open green spaces and pristine coastline. The neighborhood plan will focus on protecting vegetation and enhancing open spaces throughout the area. Community parks, playgrounds and quiet zones are being designated to encourage outdoor recreation and improve public health. Consideration is also given to sorting of waste and effort made to reduce noise and air pollution within residential areas.

My neighborhood
A neighborhood plan aims to allow established neighborhoods to grow and adapt to changing priorities while preserving their unique traits and character.
This approach helps us look to the future while protecting the spirit of each community—the heartbeat of every neighborhood.

Eco-friendly transportation
There is a strong focus on improving conditions for eco-friendly transportation in the neighborhood plan and reducing disturbances from vehicular traffic. Increased use of environmentally friendly transportation supports our goals for sustainable neighborhoods with retail and services in mixed-use developments.

Consultation during creation of the urban district plan
We prioritize developing the neighborhood plan in partnership with residents and other stakeholders. Their knowledge of the local environment can significantly shape the proposals presented in the plan. The consultation process is divided into six basic steps that follow the planning work, from the initial idea search through to the approved plan.

What is a neighborhood plan
The neighborhood plan is a land-use plan for established neighborhoods aiming to make them more eco-friendly, sustainable, and evolve the community in line with new focuses.
