About the preschool

Grænaborg is open from 7:45am to 4:30pm

Grænaborg Preschool originally opened in 1931 on Hringbraut and was run by the child welfare society Barnavinafélagið Sumargjöf. The City of Reykjavík took over the operation in 1979 and the preschool moved to its current premises in 1983. The premises are owned by Barnavinafélagið Sumargjöf and Reykjavík City rents them to operate the preschool. Grænaborg has 76 children at the same time in 4 divisions. The groups are called Dropadeild, Sólskinsdeild, Mánadeild, and Stjörnudeild. There are about 20 employees.

Philosophy

The motto of Grænaborg is joy, respect, care, and friendliness

The preschool follows the guidelines of the National Preschool Curriculum, which is published by the Ministry of Education. The main goal of this curriculum is to create a safe and child-friendly environment for children and to support their overall development. Work on basic education and preschool activities is also based on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. Free play is a common thread in all activities work and all children should be able to enjoy themselves based on their own criteria and abilities.

The Center for Grænaborg

Grænaborg Preschool falls under West Center. West Center provides a wide range of services to the residents of Vesturbær, Miðborg, and Hlíðar and is a comprehensive information source for municipal services. The Center provides welfare services, school services to preschool and primary schools, day care and recreational counseling, and various other services.

Child prosperity

The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties.

Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity contact in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity contact offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services.

Children, youth, and guardians can reach the school prosperity contact to request integrated services.
