Gender equality

The City of Reykjavík's Human Rights Policy includes a section on gender equality.

Projects of the Human Rights Office related to gender equality can be accessed in the Human Rights and Democracy Action Plan from 2019 through 2022. The Plan also serves as Reykjavík City's equality plan in accordance with Article 12 of Act No. 10/2008 on Equal Status and Equal Rights of Women and Men.

Together Against Violence

In January 2015, Reykjavík City began a project in collaboration with the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police, The Women's Shelter, and Primary Care of the Capital Area, called Together Against Violence. The project aims to enhance support for victims and convey a clear message that domestic violence is not tolerated.

Pornification is Sexual Harassment

The pamphlet is a collaborative project between the Human Rights & Democracy Office and MARK, the Center for Diversity and Gender Research at the University of Iceland. The pamphlet demonstrates how discussions about appearance, along with degrading representations, are used to undermine women's credibility and strength. Arguments are made that pornification, whether expressed in words or imagery, is sexual harassment.

Gendered figures

The Human Rights & Democracy Office and the Human Rights, Innovation, and Democracy Council of Reykjavík City have published a pamphlet called 'Gendered Figures', containing statistical information that highlights the different status of men and women in various aspects within the City.

Equality in sports clubs

Equality in schools

A joint project of the Human Rights Office of Reykjavík City and the Department of Education & Youth, supported by the Directorate of Equality. The project involves equality education for teachers in preschools and primary schools, and staff at City run after-school programs and youth centers.

Gender budgeting

Gender budgeting is an extensive project carried out across all City departments. The project's purpose is to promote increased equality and better utilization of funds with the residents' needs as a guiding principle. The Project Manager for gender budgeting works at the Human Rights & Democracy Office.

European Charter for the Equality of Women and Men

Reykjavík City has signed the European Charter for the Equality of Women and Men in Local Life.
