The LGBT+ Youth Center is a joint project of Reykjavík City and Samtökin '78, operated by Tjörnin Recreation Center. The target group is children and adolescents in grades 8-10 across Reykjavík. We also offer sessions for grades 5-7 on Tuesdays from 5-6:30pm. The LGBT+ Youth Center collaborates closely with other youth centers of Tjörnin and throughout the city.

The center aims to provide LGBT+ children and adolescents a safe space to be themselves, meet other LGBT+ youth, strengthen their self-image, and belong to the LGBT+ community. Participants don't need to be LGBT+ to attend, and all are welcome. The center offers diverse activities appealing to children and adolescents with different interests, ensuring a safe and comfortable environment.

Practical information

LGBT+ children and young people in sports, recreation and youth programs

To improve the experience of LGBT+ children and young people, two factors are most important: visible support, and an end to discrimination and hurtful language. Both factors can have positive effects on the entire LGBT+ community as well as friends of LGBT+ people and their families. It is also important to address specific issues affecting transgender and intersex people, such as access to appropriate facilities and the use of inclusive language.

When a child or young person comes out

Most of us have various ideas, either conscious or unconscious, about how the children in our lives are and should be. We envision a certain future. Today, more people recognize that every child is different, but it is completely normal to be taken aback when a child in our family goes beyond what we expected and the future we had envisioned changes.

Bullying in school and recreational activities

Bullying and violence can have a lasting impact on the psyche of children and adolescents. Workplaces of the Department of Education & Youth of Reykjavík City operate according to a bullying checklist developed in extensive consultation with professionals. This page provides information on how to respond if a child experiences bullying in primary school or during recreational activities.

Disruption to school and recreational activities

Officials have issued recommendations for parents and guardians of children in schools and recreational activities. Capital area municipalities have assigned SHS to monitor weather conditions and forecasts and send out alerts when needed, working with police and education authorities as appropriate.

Child prosperity

The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties. Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity liaison in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity liaison offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services. Children, youth, and guardians can reach the school prosperity liaison to request integrated services.

Information about prosperity contacts for children at the LGBT+ Youth Center is available on their primary schools' websites.
