There may come a point in people's lives where they need more help than can be provided at home. All other options must have been tried before requesting a nursing home stay. The City of Reykjavik operates two nursing homes providing 24-hour nursing services.
Nursing homes offer nursing services around the clock. They also provide medical care, physical therapy and occupational therapy. Residents are offered a healthy and nutritious diet, as well as a variety of rewarding activities.
Nursing homes are for people with an approved Skills and Health Assessment who are no longer able to live at home despite support from health and social services.
The first step to being admitted to a nursing home is to apply for a Skills and Health Assessment. Such assessments can be applied for on the website of the Directorate of Health. Healthcare workers can also provide the assessment and assist in completing the questionnaire.
Information on fees and costs can be obtained from the Social Insurance Administration, which also calculates the costs of each resident.
