Nursing homes
There may come a point in people's lives where they need more help than can be provided at home. All other options must have been tried before requesting a nursing home stay. The City of Reykjavík operates two nursing homes providing 24-hour nursing services.
What services are available?
Nursing homes offer nursing services around the clock. They also provide medical care, physical therapy and occupational therapy. Residents are offered a healthy and nutritious diet, as well as a variety of rewarding activities.
Am I entitled to be placed in a nursing home?
Nursing homes are for people with an approved competence and health assessment who are no longer able to live at home despite support from health and social services.
How do I apply for the placement?
The first step to being admitted to a nursing home is to apply for a competence and health assessment. Such assessments can be applied for on the website of the Directorate of Health. Healthcare workers can also provide the assessment and assist in completing the questionnaire.

Information on fees and costs can be obtained from the Social Insurance Administration, which also calculates the costs of each resident.
