About these elections
Parliamentary elections will be held on September 25, 2021. The term of office is four years.
Icelandic citizens who have had legal residence abroad for less than 8 years from December 1, 2020, can vote in the 2021 parliamentary elections. Those who have had legal residence abroad for more than 8 years must apply to be added to the electoral register before December 1, 2020, to gain voting eligibility for the 2021 parliamentary elections.
Students studying in the Nordic countries, who have moved their legal domicile based on the Nordic Agreement, are also entitled to be on the electoral register. Registers Iceland has implemented a new application process regarding their registration. The change requires these students to notify Registers Iceland electronically that they are students to be included on the electoral register for the municipal elections. An online form for this purpose can be filled out here.
Changes to the electoral register are made until the last moment. The electoral register base had about 91,000 voters as of August 21.
