Winter Lights Festival - About

About the festival

The Winter Lights Festival will be held on February 1–3, 2024 and the festival takes place in all six municipalities of the capital region. This festival of light and darkness consists of three main pillars: Museum Night, Swimming Pool Night and Lights Trail, together with over 150 events where several artists take part in creating a unique atmosphere in the city.

All events at the Winter Lights Festival are free of charge.

Museum Night

Museum Night will be held on Friday evening, February 2, 2024, when many museums in the entire capital area will open their doors and offer a fun and varied program from 6–11 pm. Emphasis will be placed on offering non-traditional events this evening and giving visitors a new perspective on the museums. Residents and visitors of the city of all ages can enjoy Museum Night until the evening free of charge.

Swimming Pool Night

Swimming pool night will be held on Saturday evening, February 3, 2024, when there will be free entry from 5–10 pm in twelve swimming pools in the capital area. Events in the pools will be of various kinds and guests will get to experience a unique and unusual evening in the amazing darkness. Light, darkness and joy will reign supreme, as guests are encouraged to participate by relaxing and enjoying the moment.

Lights Trail

The Winter Festival's Light trail will play a key role, but it is a walking path from Hallgrímskirkja down Skólavörðustígur and down to Austurvöllur, which is guarded with light artworks.

These light artworks will illuminate the city centre from 6:30–10:30 pm every day of the Winter Lights Festival. Experience outdoor art with your loved ones at your own pace.
