Development of the Winter Garden in Breiðholt

Description of the action and objectives

Green Deal action

Construction has begun on developing the Winter Garden in Breiðholt alongside construction work on Arnarnesvegur. The Winter Garden is a family garden with year-round activities. The plan includes diverse ski trails for beginners as well as slopes for ski club training. In summer, diverse biking trails and dry skiing will be available once the park is fully developed. The goal is to accommodate groups from preschools, primary schools, and recreational programs. Park construction will occur in phases, with the first phase of landscaping already underway. The first lift is expected to open around New Year's 2026.

Implementation period

Planned completion in the second half of 2025

Status: In progress

Status report on July 1, 2025

100 million is budgeted for the Winter Garden in 2025. The funds will go toward completing landscaping, planting, snow barriers, and parking areas. Additionally, funding this year will go toward design for the next phase: accessibility lifts, lighting, snow production, and facilities. Landscaping is being completed, and this summer and fall will focus on seeding ski trails and paths, as well as planting and creating parking areas. The public health and preventive benefits of this project are undeniable. Investment funding for continued construction over the next few years has not yet been determined.
