Support families
Support families provide parenting support for parents of children inside and outside the home. Their role includes easing the burden on the child and family, giving parents a chance to rest, strengthening the children's support network and increasing their opportunities for social participation.
How do I apply for a support family?
Support Families are a part of the support program for children and their families. To apply for these services, first book a call with a counselor. An assessment of the family's overall needs is made before deciding to provide support through a support family.
What services are available?
With support families, children get variety, encouragement and support, as well as opportunities to strengthen their social connections and engagement. The child stays in the support family home and participates in its daily domestic life.
A support family stay can last for a maximum of 15 days per month. When a child’s case is pending with Reykjavík Child Protection Services, the family support stay may last a maximum of 7 days per month.
The services are for families of disabled children who are legal residents of Reykjavík.
Becoming a support family
Becoming a support family is a rewarding and virtuous method to do good. Support families are as different as they are many. Sometimes there is a connection between the child’s family and their support family, but in other cases there is no connection. You can apply for an operating license as a support family from the Welfare Quality and Control Authority.
