Stakeholder Presentation
At the Environment and Planning Council meeting on March 22, 2023, officials presented a planning description dated March 7, 2023, for a new land-use plan for the Meteorological Office area, Veðurstofureitur. The proposal suggests creating a new residential area with services on Veðurstofuhæð.
- To analyze the current state of Veðurstofuhæð and its surroundings to build a comprehensive new residential area in the city center with services, emphasizing strong environmental focus in harmony with the existing environment.
- To identify the area's spatial strengths and integrate them with the urban context nearest to the site in Hlíðar and Kringla.
- To create a new 7-meter wide connection serving all active travel modes under Bústaðavegur, linking the north-south axis between Stigahlíð and Beykihlíð/Birkihlíð (Suðurver and Klettaskóli).
- To examine development possibilities for plots in the area, building heights, standalone or clustered structures, and shared spaces.
- To determine an appropriate utilization ratio for new buildings in the area.
- To review parking requirements and parking garages, as well as vehicle access arrangements to the residential area, focusing on shared use with the Meteorological Office.
- To ensure the sharing economy can serve all residents of the area.
- To locate a group home for 5-7 disabled people.
- To define outdoor recreation areas for residents and current neighbors.
The building volume in the area will be divided among Green Housing of the Future on Veðurhæðin, Variat - affordable housing, and Bjarg Housing Association. The Icelandic Meteorological Office will move entirely to Bústaðavegur 7, with a new building area west of the existing structure. Veitur Utilities' building lot for future cold water tank expansion will be south of the existing tank.
