Marta Wieczorek, who was named Reykjavík Resident of the Year 2024, visited the Mayor of Reykjavík, Einar Þorsteinsson, at Reykjavík City Hall today to formally receive her award.

Marta Wieczorek performs invaluable and selfless work for the city's children as a teacher at Hólabrekkuskóli. She has also worked at a preschool, where she helped shape the early years of children in the Breiðholt neighborhood. She has also been deeply dedicated to enhancing mother tongue education at the Polish School in Reykjavík, which was founded in 2008. The school focuses on Polish language instruction while providing crucial support for bilingual students in Iceland. Students at the Polish School not only strengthen their proficiency in their mother tongue but also gain better preparation to learn Icelandic, a key factor for active participation in Icelandic society. The school acts as a crucial bridge between the Icelandic and Polish communities, benefiting not only the children who attend but also their parents. Marta also teaches Icelandic classes for children who have recently moved to Reykjavík. These classes are organized by the South Center and take place at the Family Center at Gerðuberg.

A well-deserved title

Marta has also served as a cultural ambassador for her home country in the Breiðholt neighborhood. This is part of a community project involving various language, cultural, and social groups in collaboration with the South Center. Cultural ambassadors are tasked with bridging gaps between different nationalities and cultures within the neighborhood. Their goal is to promote democracy, improve the flow of information, and strengthen community networks in the area.

The Reykjavík Resident of the Year has been awarded annually since 2011. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual who has been exemplary in their conduct or behavior and to express gratitude for their contributions. Marta is truly deserving of this honor, which the mayor announced earlier this summer at the opening of Elliðaár.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Marta once again and sincerely thank her for her outstanding work.
