Music City

About Music City

Music City Reykjavík advocates for strengthening Reykjavík as a music city by creating favorable conditions for a flourishing music scene.

History and goals

Music City Reykjavík began as a temporary project in 2017 with a steering group appointed by Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson, focusing on promoting Reykjavík as a city of music. Now, Music City Reykjavík has been established as a permanent initiative within the Department of Culture & Sports of Reykjavík City. Music City serves as a hub between Reykjavík and its music scene. Additionally, its project manager is a board member of the international network of music cities, Music Cities Network.

Music City is dedicated to creating favorable conditions and a strong support network for music-related projects to flourish in the city, and also to highlight the Reykjavík music scene which attracts both tourists and residents.

The local music industry

Music City closely collaborates with the local music industry, especially ÚTÓN, now part of the new Music Center, as well as STEF and Promote Iceland.

Music City's projects frequently involve partnerships with entities like Harpa, Iceland Airwaves, Children's Culture Festival, Art for Everyone, Hitt Húsið Youth Center, and various Reykjavík music festivals.

Support

Music City supports various music-related projects throughout the city and also functions as the organizer for others.

The focus is on supporting aspects of music-related projects in need of improvement or helping to better connect them with the public or city operations.

Inclusion is always emphasized in Music City's projects.

Inclusion

We ensure that access to events in Music City is equal for all residents, whether as participants or attendees, regardless of gender, origin, or disability.
