Dog keeping
Dog owners in Reykjavík no longer need a special dog permit — instead, dogs are registered or deregistered using electronic ID through island.is. Reykjavík Animal Services (DÝR) is in charge of matters concerning pets in Reykjavík.
Before you apply
- Read the Resolution on Dog Keeping in Reykjavík (IS).
- If you live in a multi-unit building, you'll need to obtain approval from other owners before having a dog in the building.
- Keeping a dog, and registering it, is not allowed except in the home of the owner, and the owner must be 18 years of age or older.
- Puppies should be registered no later than 4 months old.
