Preschool quality criteria
A task force on an internal and external assessment on the Department of Education & Youth prepared quality criteria and indicators for preschool in 2014. The criteria are used for the external assessment of preschool activities in Reykjavík. They should also be useful for the internal assessment of each workplace.
The criteria are divided into five sections:
- Administration
- Upbringing and education work
- Human resources
- Preschool atmosphere
- Internal assessment
The criteria are primarily based on acts and regulations on preschool activates the National Preschool Curriculum (2011), as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Child Protection Act, and the Local Authorities Act. The development of the criteria also took into account the Operational Plan of the Department of Education & Youth (SFS), the SFS special education policy, and the manuals and procedures published by SFS for the City's preschools.
The main principle of the external assessment of preschool education is guidance and an emphasis on advancement- and reform, and the aim is for it to contribute to better functioning. The future vision is that through intensive school and recreation, children and adolescents acquire education and experience to realize their dreams and positively impact their environment and society.
Following an external assessment, the preschool delivers an improvement plan to the Preschool Office of Reykjavík’s Department of Education & Youth, demonstrating how the preschool will respond to the recommendations in the assessment on reform opportunities.
