Four preschool, primary school, and playground areas to be renovated

Three preschool and primary school lots belonging to Reykjavík City will be renovated this year. Additionally, the playground at Skerplugata will be renovated. The estimated cost for these projects is 165 million króna.
The renovation of school grounds involves complete redesign and renewal of the areas from the ground up. Accessibility for all, lighting, playground equipment, surface materials, and areas for children's creative play will be improved. The main project components include earthwork, landscaping, paving, finishing of grass and planted areas, replacement of safety surfaces, and completing areas around playground equipment.
Renovation of grounds is often divided into multiple phases, and the preschool and primary school areas to be renovated this year are:
- Hálsaskógur/Kot preschool – Complete phase
- Borg-Arnarborg preschool - Phase 2
- Austurbæjarskóli - Phase 1
Construction is expected to begin in May/June with completion scheduled for October/November 2025.
Public playground at Skerplugata
The project involves renovating the public playground located on city land at Skerplugata.
What will be done?
- The playground surfaces will be renewed by removing pebble gravel and replacing it with paving stones, grass, artificial turf, and safety surfaces.
- Playground equipment will be replaced.
- The focus is on making the playground accessible for all and improving lighting where needed.
The project supports Reykjavík City's policies on accessibility for all and creating a city for children. Construction is expected to begin in May with completion scheduled for August 2025.
The City Executive Council has now authorized the Department of Environment and Planning to put these projects out for tender. The estimated total cost for renovating the preschool grounds is 100 million króna, 50 million króna for the primary school grounds, and 15 million for the public playground.
