Student housing

An extensive development of student apartments is currently underway through the collaboration of Reykjavík City with the University of Iceland/Student Foundation, Reykjavík University, and the Student Housing Association.

In total, there are about 1,800 student apartments that have been built since 2017, are under construction, or are planned to be built in the coming years.

Over nine hundred apartments in collaboration with the University of Iceland and FS:

  • Construction of 103 rental units in Brautarholt was completed in 2017
  • Construction of 244 rental units in the Science Park of the University of Iceland was finished in 2020
  • An extension to Gamli Garður with 69 rooms was completed in fall 2021
  • At Lindargata 44, 10 apartments are under construction and another 112 at Hotel Saga which will be finished in the first half of 2023.
  • The land-use plan for Vatnsstígur has been approved and the number of apartments there will increase by 11.
  • FS has been allocated a plot for up to 110 apartments at Otursnes in the first stage of New Skerjafjörður, but construction is on hold
  • The City plans to have FS build 60 apartments in Vesturbugt, 50 on the U-plot (BSÍ), 70 at the Miklabraut Highway Cap, and 79 in phase 2 of New Skerjafjörður.

The Student Housing Association is constructing 156 apartments

The Student Housing Association completed the construction of 156 new student apartments in 2021-22.

  • Construction of 17 apartments at Kapellustígur 15 was completed in the third quarter of 2021
  • 50 apartments at Austurhlíð 2-4 were finished in the fourth quarter of 2021
  • 11 apartments at Klausturstígur 2 were completed in the fourth quarter of 2021
  • 11 apartments at Klausturstígur 6 were finished in the second quarter of 2022
  • 17 apartments at Klausturstígur 4 were completed in the third quarter of 2022
  • 50 apartments at Stakkahlíð 3-5 were finished in the third quarter of 2022

The City secured commitments and letters of intent in late March 2022 for housing development:

  • 65 apartments at Arnarbakki
  • 40 apartments in Gufunes II
  • 50 apartments at Sóleyjarrimi
  • 50 apartments at Sæbraut Highway Cap

Almost 400 apartments in collaboration with Reykjavík University's Building Association:

  • The construction of the first stage of Reykjavík University's University Residence, 125 rental units at Nauthólsvegur 83, was completed in 2020
  • The second stage of Reykjavík University's University Residence, 130 rental units at Nauthólsvegur 85, was put into use in September 2021
  • An approved land-use plan is in place for the third stage at Nauthólsvegur 87 with 166 rental units. Construction is expected to start in 2023.
