Hidden Women in History

The focus is on women and LGBT+ sexuality in the history of Iceland. The curriculum is based on recent research on Icelandic LGBT+ history, LGBT+ historiography, and LGBT+ educational studies, drawing attention to the interplay between gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, residency, and social status. It also emphasizes critical thinking and 'critical examination of accepted ideas in society and its institutions' by examining how queerness has been manifested in Icelandic society at different times.

The material is suitable for a wide range of teaching in upper primary and secondary schools and can be used to enhance discussion about LGBT+ identities, women, and gender issues in all school activities. It consists of 10 chapters in PDF format, suitable for both printing and screen reading. The material is also available in audio format.

All the chapters can be taught in any order or individually, as each one is self-contained. However, it is recommended that the introductory chapter always be taught first before proceeding. Each chapter consists of the main text, short framed articles about specific subject elements, and assignments. Part B of the teaching guide provides an introduction to each chapter for teachers. There, the most important concepts of the respective chapter and its objectives are specified. Also, supplementary materials, sources, and other teachings aids that can be used in the classroom are indicated. Among the supplementary material, the Huldukonur website is especially notable, as each chapter of the material is based on one or more pages from it. Teachers are directed to relevant pages where they can read about the sources the material is based on, including detailed discussion and interpretation.
