Femininity, stereotypes, and concepts

A project for students to examine female characters using specific feminist concepts.

About the project

Equality, Stereotypes

Connection to the educational policy: Social skills

Type of material: Projects

Target group: 13-16 years old

Subjects: Equality, Stereotypes, Concepts

Students choose two female characters from social media platforms, television series, movies, or books. Students will describe the character, and include a picture and a source. Students analyze the character with regard to the following concepts:

1. Objectification

2. Male gaze

3. Pornification

4. Misogyny

5. Gender roles

6. Normalization (of what?)

7. Stereotype

8. Power relations

Note that the analysis needs to be precise and well-explained so that we all understand the student's thought process. The concept must be defined in the analysis and applied to the relevant subject matter. The concept can be applied even if it doesn't fit the image/type - such as, 'there is no pornification in the type because it shows no referrals to pornography, neither in behavior nor appearance but is...'
