About the Accessibility Policy

Reykjavík City's Accessibility Policy is a comprehensive approach addressing accessibility in its broadest sense. It is based on the philosophy of inclusive design, enhancing access to buildings and urban spaces, as well as to information, services, and support.

Focus areas of the Reykjavík City Accessibility Policy

Facilities with Reykjavík City operations are to be accessible to everyone

  • At new constructions and all developments, ensure accessibility for all based on the principle of inclusive design.
  • Accessibility to older buildings owned or leased by the City for its operations shall be systematically improved.
  • Signage and information about accessibility within City-owned buildings should be clear to visitors.
  • Information about access to Reykjavík City structures will be improved and communicated in an organized manner.
  • Reykjavík City staff will receive proper training to provide services to residents regardless of their accessibility needs.

City land should support diverse needs, and all residents should be able to navigate it regardless of their mode of transportation

  • People with different abilities and disabilities should be able to go about their way without the need for special solutions.
  • Public transportation and its accessibility should meet the needs of groups with diverse abilities and disabilities.
  • Private entities should be encouraged to be mindful of the environment and accessibility to meet the diverse needs of various groups.
  • Accessibility for all at construction sites will be ensured through ramps and good information dissemination.
  • Parking spaces for users of disabled parking permits (P-marked) are to be known, visible, and accessible

Services and events organized by the City should meet the needs of different groups

  • Information on Reykjavík City's websites should meet international standards and guidelines for accessibility, including the EU's Web Accessibility Directive.
  • Information about services should be accessible and simple.
  • Accessibility at organized City events should always be considered, and support should be available.
  • User-centered design methodology should be applied in transforming services and ensuring everyone has access to digital services.
  • Reykjavík City staff should be informed and aware of the diverse accessibility and support needs of residents.

Purpose of the Policy

The objective of the Accessibility Policy is to ensure that Reykjavík City is accessible to all residents.

 

Reykjavík City should also be accessible to all visitors, regardless of their accessibility needs.

 

The action plan for the Policy is in effect until the end of 2024, at which time it will be reviewed.

 

 

Guiding principles of the Accessibility Policy

  1. To implement the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the philosophy of independent living and inclusive design
  2. To make it easy for city residents to obtain information about their right to services
  3. To ensure the City takes the initiative to offer people the services they are entitled to
  4. To ensure that people experience safe and comfortable access to structures and on city land
  5. To ensure that the city's events are for everyone and meet diverse needs
  6. To ensure the environment and services accommodate diverse abilities and individuals, with the underlying principle that all City services and environment have one path for everyone
  7. To ensure that all city residents have equal rights to participate and feel as part of the community
  8. To ensure that all residents receive the necessary support to access and use services
  9. To ensure that disabled people and representative associations are consulted on all matters concerning their interests
