Description of the action and objectives

Green Deal action

We aim to become carbon neutral by 2030. This involves challenges that require creative solutions that benefit Reykjavík, Iceland and the entire world. We need to ensure we seize the opportunities that arise. The City wants to encourage and support green innovation projects, accelerators and knowledge centers, strengthen the circular system by planning an eco-industrial park at Álfsnes, reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all sectors of the city's economy, and increase job opportunities near sustainable transportation.

Status report on July 1, 2024

Reykjavík City supports Hringiða, a business accelerator aimed at highlighting, strengthening and supporting early-stage innovation projects based on circular economy principles and sustainability. Reykjavík City has a representative in the steering group, provides mentoring, and additionally, Þórdís Lóa Þórhallsdóttir, President of City Council, delivered a presentation to the country's key investors on the final day of Hringiða in May 2024.

Work continued on Green Housing of the Future projects, where Reykjavík City provided economic incentives for green housing development, with the groundbreaking ceremony held at Frakkastígur 1. Procurement for framework planning and development plan for an eco-industrial park at Álfsnes was prepared.

Preparation for the first Climate City Contract took place during summer 2024. Related to this, actions and participation from external parties are expected, including businesses, Section B – corporations and institutions. Dialogue and consultation with these stakeholders took place during the first half of 2024.
