Reykjavík City is offering Reykjavík children born from 2010 to 2014 a free two-month Strætó Public Transport pass. The program improves access to public transit for children and young people.

Young people's request for a great basketball court becomes reality

Young people in Breiðholt pitched an idea to renovate the Völvufell basketball court during a meeting with the mayor — and now their wish has come true.

The renovation traces back to a youth meeting that Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir called during Neighborhood Days in Breiðholt last October. 

Ferris wheel May 22, 2026

Ferris wheel returns to Miðbakki

A ferris wheel will be installed for the third straight summer at Miðbakki in Reykjavík, operated by the same party as in previous years. The ferris wheel will be free and open to the public on the National Day of Iceland, June 17, and again on Culture Night, Aug. 22.

Opportunities to improve school operations

A new report prepared for the Association of Municipalities in the Capital Area (SSH) identifies opportunities to reduce the workload for primary school teachers and other staff. The report falls under the Welfare and Community policy area of the capital area's 2025-2029 strategic plan. The findings were presented at a joint meeting of SSH and school administrators on Tuesday, May 19th
