Reykjavík Constituency Electoral Commission

Reykjavík, May 17, 2026

The Reykjavík Constituency Electoral Commission completed its review of amended ballots and prepared an election results declaration and election report for the National Electoral Commission, satisfying Article 119(a) of the Voting Act. The review uncovered a discrepancy between the figures announced at the polling session and the actual vote count, stemming from a data entry error on the tally sheet. The tally sheet recorded more votes than voters actually cast.

The announced figures stated a total of 71,996 votes, while the actual number cast was 70,996. Consequently, the announced figures credited the Center Party's M list with 8,912 votes, though the correct total was 7,912. Because those votes never existed, the correction did not redistribute any votes to other party lists. This was a straightforward numerical correction; the discrepancy does not affect the number of representatives assigned to each party list or seat allocation on the City Council.

The final results of the city ouncil elections held on May 16, 2026, are as follows:

32 advance votes cast under list letter V

During the elections, officials ruled 32 advance votes cast under list letter V invalid. V is the list letter of the Left-Green Movement, which did not field its own list in Reykjavík but instead supported Vinstrið's party list under list letter A.

The Reykjavík Constituency Electoral Commission determined these voters' intent was too unclear to prove they meant to cast their ballots for the Left-Green Movement's party list. However, observers representing the Left-Green Movement and the Socialist Party argued officials should count the votes as valid because of an existing electoral alliance.

The Reykjavík Constituency Electoral Commission considers the observers' suggestions regarding these disputed votes well-founded and believes legislators should clarify the Voting Act regarding electoral alliances, including cases where political organizations run on a joint party list.

Calling for amendments to the Voting Act

Finally, drawing on its experience with these elections, the Reykjavík Constituency Electoral Commission believes lawmakers should examine whether to amend the Voting Act to allow vote counting to begin earlier.
