Free city bus service for primary school-age children
Children born between 2010 and 2014 who have legal residence in Reykjavík are eligible for a two-month free Strætó Public Transport pass. Applications will be accepted through June 30, 2026.
The goal is to make it easier for children and young people to get around the city, support their independence in daily travel, and reduce the need for parents to drive them to school, sports, and recreational activities.
How does it work?
Submit applications through Reykjavík's My Pages. The subscription can then be accessed through the Klapp app (Strætó Public Transport's app), on a Klapp card, or on a key fob.
Before applying, set up a Klapp account for the child using the phone number that will be linked to the subscription. Use the child's own phone number if they have a smartphone.
To use the Klapp app, the child must have access to an internet-connected smartphone. If the phone has a broken screen or is not connected to the internet, the child will not be able to use the app to scan their fare.
Klapp cards and key fobs
If the child does not have a smartphone, the subscription can be loaded onto a Klapp card or key fob. If the child already has a Klapp card or key fob, the guardian enters the card number in the application form on Reykjavík City's My Pages.
What if my child doesn't have a card or key fob?
If your child does not have a card or key fob, you will need to obtain one at the City's service center at Borgartún 12 before submitting an application through Reykjavík's My Pages.
What if my child already has a subscription?
If your child already has an active pass — whether a monthly or annual subscription — two additional months will be added once the current subscription expires.
