About the preschool

Grandaborg is open from 7:45am to 4:30pm

Grandaborg Preschool opened its doors in May 1985. It is located in Vesturbær in the western part of Reykjavík, near the KR sports field, Vesturbæjarlaug Pool, and Grandaskóli. It is also close to the center of Reykjavík, where you can go see the ducks at the pond. The preschool is divided into four groups, with a capacity to serve 75 children at one time. The groups are named after elements of the local environment, such as nature, the beach, and the sea, and are called Fjöruvík, Klettavík, Skeljavík, and Ölduvík. Grandaborg has a total of 25 employees.

Philosophy

The motto of Grandaborg is friendship, empathy, and respect

Grandaborg follows the strategy of Heilsuleikskólinn, a health preschool. The aim of this strategy is to encourage a positive outlook towards healthy living through John Dewey's philosophy of experience, interest, and activity, as well as Abraham Maslow's needs pyramid regarding the development of identity. Outdoor learning and environmental education are central elements of Grandaborg’s early childhood education. The focus is on developing children’s environmental awareness, both in the preschool’s immediate surroundings and during off‑site visits.

The Center for Grandaborg

Grandaborg Preschool falls under West Center. West Center provides a wide range of services to the residents of Vesturbær, Miðborg, and Hlíðar and is a comprehensive information source for municipal services. The Center provides welfare services, school services to preschool and primary schools, day care and recreational counseling, and various other services.

Child prosperity

The new Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties.

Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity liaison in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity liaison offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services.

Children, youth, and guardians can reach the school prosperity liaison to request integrated services.
