Preschool with a nursery division
Heiðarborg Preschool was founded in June 1990. It is located near Rauðavatn, Elliðaárdalur, and the stables in Víðidalur, and we enjoy spending time with these natural gems on walks and during outdoor studies. Heiðarborg has around 70 children attend at the same time in four groups. The groups Bali and Laut are for 3 to 6 year olds, Lund is for 2-3 year olds, and Brekka is for 12-24 month olds. There are about 20 employees.
Preschool Director: Jóhanna Benný Hannesdóttir
Want to know more about Heiðarborg? In this very short video, we give a glimpse of the preschool activities. It was made by Erla Stefánsdóttir and Antonía Lárusdóttir for the the Department of Education & Youth.
The values of Heiðarborg are friendship, joy, and respect
The preschool follows the theories of Howard Gardner on multiple intelligences and John Dewey. It is a "green school” (“skóli á grænni grein”) and therefore has a focus on environmental education. The preschool has a lot of musical activities and emphasizes physical activity. Providing children a safe environment is also a priority, as well as promoting their development, encouraging their creativity, and helping them strengthen their identities.
Do you want to know more about the philosophy and daily operations of Heiðarborg? In the school curriculum, you'll find detailed information about the school's philosophical emphasis and approach to play, learning, and work.
What's ahead for Heiðarborg? In the operational plan, you'll find, among other things, the school's internal and external evaluations for the last year, an improvement plan, the preschool calendar, and much more.
When does Heiðarborg have teacher workdays? In the preschool calendar, you'll find information about days off and various other details.
We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City preschools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in preschool activities. All Reykjavík City preschools have parent associations and parent councils.
Heiðarborg Preschool falls under East Center. East Center provides a wide range of services to the residents of Árbær, Grafarholt, Grafarvogur, and Kjalarnes and is a comprehensive information source for municipal services. The Center provides welfare services, school services to preschool and primary schools, day care and recreational counseling, and various other services.
