Description of the action and objectives
Green Deal action
A new educational and experiential path called the String of Pearls Path (I. Perlufestin) in Öskjuhlíð, the winning proposal of a 2013 design competition, is currently being made. Emphasis is put on universal accessibility.

Status report on January 1, 2024
In 2023, a 450-meter long lighted wooden path with stopping points and benches made from Icelandic forest wood from Heiðmörk (spruce from the Reykjavík Forestry Association) was built on the east slope of Öskjuhlíð. Additionally, a paved connecting path with snow melting from the south of Perlan to the String of Pearls Path (the circular path) with two stopping points was constructed.

July 2023 | The path to Perlan from the String of Pearls Path was paved, and light poles were installed along the path. The north part of the String of Pearls Path is a wooden path: A frame has been erected, the surface was covered, and light poles installed. Path completion is scheduled for December 2023. Next steps include a concrete path with snow melting in the west slopes, gravel paths on the north and south slopes, and lighting installation. Stopping points will be completed along the entire String of Pearls Path. Project completion is set for December 2024. |
January 2023 | The trail has been shaped, opening a path through the forest and transferring soil as needed. A portion of the trail will be a wooden footpath constructed from Icelandic materials, which is planned for completion in 2023. |
