About the preschool

A new preschool is going to be built at Völvufell in the coming years, and it will be able to accommodate 200 children. It is planned that the preschools Ösp and Holt will be closed in their current form and merged in this new preschool, which will open in 2028. The facilities for young children at the school should be good.

The preschool will operate in the spirit of an open school with the main goal of creating good facilities for parents of young children to learn from other parents and professionals about various topics related to their children's development, such as care, emotional relationships, positive parenting, physical activity, and language development, while providing specific resources and early intervention for families.

City of Reykjavík preschools follow the National Preschool Curriculum with reference to the Reykjavík City Education Policy. It focuses on encouraging children's discovery and play and making them active participants in a democratic society.

Projects

When designing a new preschool, the general goals for preschool activities outlined in the Reykjavík City Education Policy and the National Preschool Curriculum from 2011, as well as the goals of an open preschool, must be taken into account.

Fellahverfi has a unique position in regards to the number of bilingual and multilingual children, which has been steadily increasing in recent years. Great emphasis is placed on language stimulation, language acquisition and multilingualism. There is also an emphasis on music as a basis for language development and to strengthen children's self-image. In Fellahverfi, there is strong collaboration between the preschool, primary school, and after-school program, which has led to the development of diverse teaching methods.

The new Preschool at Völvufell is a part of the Bridging the Gap development initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between parental leave and preschool.
