About the preschool

Jörfi is open from 7:30am to 4:30pm

Jörfi Preschool opened in August 1997 and operates at two locations. In fall 2025, the preschool opened two new infant units, and Jörfi became a preschool with seven divisions, serving 122 children. The preschool is divided into older divisions for ages 3-5, located at Hæðargarður 27a, and infant units for ages 1-3 called "Little Jörfi" at Bústaðavegur 81. The preschool's facilities and location are excellent, offering a variety of outdoor activities. The area is surrounded by green spaces and parks, including Hákonarlundur, Elliðaárdalur, Fossvogsdalur, and Laugardalur, all of which are within walking distance.

Philosophy

The values of Jörfi are joy, creativity, and dignity

Jörfi preschool is implementing a new educational policy based on Reggio Emilia. Reggio Emilia's philosophy emphasizes respecting children's perspectives, encouraging creativity and fostering curiosity through play and interaction.

The environment plays a crucial role in children's learning. It promotes research and creativity in children. This philosophy highlights that a well-designed environment can support learning by being stimulating and open to various methods.

Creative work in all arts and research is emphasized, along with positive self-image, independence and initiative in upbringing. We value children's interests, creativity, and opinions, and encourages respectful interactions between children and adults and their environment.

Preschool literacy

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City preschools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in early childhood education. All Reykjavík City preschools have parent associations and parent councils.

The Center for Jörfi

Jörfi Preschool falls under North Center. North Center provides a wide range of services to the residents of Laugardalur and Háaleiti and is a comprehensive information source for municipal services. The Center provides welfare services, school services to preschool and primary schools, day care and recreational counseling, and various other services.

Child prosperity

The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties.

Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity liaison in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity liaison offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services.

Children, youth, and guardians can reach the school prosperity liaison to request integrated services.
