Hi! The English site is only a beta for now and still has many errors (especially in names and locations).
We are working hard to fix them and making more content available than ever before so expect constant updates.
Brákarborg opened in 1952 and is therefore one of the oldest preschools in Reykjavík. The preschool is located in a well-established neighborhood close to Laugardalur, providing access to numerous resources and opportunities for preschool activities throughout the year. About 30 people work in Brákarborg and there are 110 children there at the same time in six divisions. The groups are called Dalur, Dyngja, Hlíð, Holt, Lundur, and Laut.
Preschool Director: Sólrún Óskarsdóttir
Want to know more about Brákarborg? In this very short video, we give a glimpse of the preschool activities. It was made by Erla Stefánsdóttir and Antonía Lárusdóttir for the Department of Education & Youth.
The values of Brákarborg are discipline, respect, and care
The preschool works according to John Dewey's philosophy allowing all to learn from their experiences. The main learning tools of Brákarborg are Caroline Pratt's unit blocks together with a positive behavior strategy and the 'Solution Circle' creates independence in communication with respect and the ability to set boundaries.
Brákarborg Preschool falls under North Center. North Center provides a wide range of services to the residents of Laugardalur and Háaleiti and is a comprehensive information source for municipal services. The Center provides welfare services, school services to preschool and primary schools, day care and recreational counseling, and various other services.
We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City preschools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in preschool activities. All Reykjavík City preschools have parent associations and parent councils.
