About the preschool

Open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm

Sunnufold preschool was established in 2011. It operates at two locations, Frosti and Logi, in the Foldahverfi neighborhood of Grafarvogur. The preschool has around 30 employees and serves approximately 100 children, who are divided into five groups. The groups are called Tröllheimar, Hulduheimar, Álfheimar, Mánakot, and Stjörnukot. Grafarvogur provides easy access to nearby natural areas, offering opportunities for observing diverse bird life, visiting the beach for educational trips, and exploring the forest for fun outings.

Sunnufold Preschool

Want to know more about Sunnufold? In this very short video, we give a glimpse of the preschool activities. It was made by Erla Stefánsdóttir and Antonía Lárusdóttir for the Department of Education & Youth.

At Sunnufold Preschool, the key values are happiness, language development, play, autonomy, and health

The preschool's approach is informed by social constructivism, which recognizes that knowledge is created through social interactions and experiences. Children do not learn in isolation, but rather engage with materials and concepts through hands-on manipulation, conversations, and the exchange of ideas. This approach is influenced by theories of many notable educators and thinkers, including John Dewey, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, Maria Montessori, and Ellen Key. There is a famous quote from Dewey: “learning by doing”. Modern theories have been updated to reflect the emphasis on social learning, and "learning by doing with others" is now seen as a more accurate description of the group educational experience offered in preschools like Sunnufold.

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City preschools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in preschool activities. All Reykjavík City preschools have parent associations and parent councils.

Child prosperity

The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties. Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a contact person in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The contact person offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services. Children, youth, and guardians can contact the school contact person to request integrated services.
