Sæbraut Highway Cap
Development on and around a road cap for Sæbraut by Vogahverfi.
Here you can check out the proposals of five interdisciplinary groups on how to implement the development on and around a road cap on Sæbraut by Vogahverfi. The proposals are the results of an idea search announced by Reykjavík City in 2020.
The proposals
The proposals depict the layout and execution of the residential and service buildings along with connections due to the cap over Sæbraut by Vogahverfi, between Miklabraut/Vesturlandsvegur and north of Skeiðarvogur, along with the route of CityLine, both along Sæbraut and over Elliðavogur from Sævarhöfði to Suðurlandsbraut. The plan also provides for a CityLine central station in the area.
Reykjavík City has the authority to further develop these proposals, modify them and/or delegate their implementation to others. This is, therefore, a kind of idea bank for possible implementation in the next round of development for this large project.

Proposal by Arkís, Landslag, and Mannvit.
Vogatorg Square is key to connecting Elliðaárdalur and Laugardalur with continuous green infrastructure. Vogatorg Square is also an important junction in the city's and the capital area's transport system, as here intersect transportation routes that run from east to west and from north to south.
The development of Vogatorg Square is possible with the addition of Sæbraut Highway Cap, which unifies the aforementioned neighborhoods into a continuous urban layout where the safe use of sustainable modes of transportation takes precedence.

Proposal from Yrki arkitektar, Dagný Land Design, and Hnit verkfræðistofa.
New buildings on the Sæbraut Highway Cap will connect the mature Vogahverfi neighborhood with the new Vogabyggð neighborhood. The cap also provides a new and stronger connection from Vogahverfi to Elliðaár and Elliðaárdalur. This creates a continuous area of buildings from Laugardalur to Elliðaárdalur.
New buildings on the cap are extensions from the plots east of Sæbraut. In this way, the new buildings bridge Vogabyggð with Vogahverfi.

Proposal from Teiknistofan Tröð, Kanon arkitektar, and VSÓ ráðgjöf.
The main idea is to connect the old buildings in Vogar with the new Vogabyggð and Elliðaárvogur. The emphasis is on diverse public spaces, sustainable transportation, and mixed construction on a humane scale without disruption from the main road traffic of Sæbraut, which goes into a cap. A new public space - "Ramblan" - on top of the cap will unite the existing neighborhood of Vogar and the new Vogabyggð neighborhood.
The first phase of CityLine crosses the area, and a new central station will be built on the highway cap at its southern end.

A long area forms on top of the cap over Sæbraut, between Vogar and Vogabyggð. The plan emphasizes it being used to form connections between the neighborhoods. This is, among other things, done through creating Langigarður, a park along the west side of the houses at Dugguvogur.
The plan is for the park to serve the neighborhoods to either side, with a significant focus on a network of walking and biking paths connecting the neighborhoods, outdoor recreation areas, and nature.

Proposal of Askur arkitektar, Efla, and Gagarín
The Vogar neighborhood exists in our minds as an established area. The evolving Vogabyggð Development serves as an addition to the established Vogar neighborhood, and the new development at Sæbraut Highway Cap will ensure that Vogar becomes one of the more holistic and diverse neighborhoods of the city. Vogatorg Square will become one of the more significant interchange points for the CityLine and a destination in itself.
Despite the urban development, the connections with Elliðaár and the valley are strong. Here is a place for cultural activities, dining venues, recreation, and outdoor activities.
