How to reset multi-factor authentication on your new phone

If you have a new phone and still have full access to your old phone, you can usually clone the old phone to the new one. Do this when setting up the new phone. This transfers your ID to the new phone and should work as before.

Instructions to reset multi-factor authentication (MFA) on your new smart device.

1.

Back up your data on the old device:

 

Open "Settings"

 

Select "Google"

 

Select "Backup"

 

Follow on-screen instructions and select "Back up now"

On the new device:

 

Turn on the device

 

Select "Start"

 

Connect the device to Wi-Fi

 

Choose to copy data from another device. If prompted about a cable, select "No cable" > Ok

 

Follow on-screen instructions to copy data.

 

This can take a long time depending on the amount of data to transfer, including photos, videos and apps. After copying, check photos and messages on the new device to ensure all data transferred successfully.

Lost your phone?

If you've lost your phone, you need to reset your authentication. This is done as if you're setting up multi-factor authentication for the first time.
