How to get MFA

Instructions for setting up multi-factor authentication (MFA)

MFA helps, for instance, if a third-party gets your password. Instead of signing in directly, you'll get a notification in the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone. You can approve or deny the sign-in attempt.

Step by Step

1.

Start by downloading the "Microsoft Authenticator" app on your smartphone.

Then open your computer's browser and go to www.aka.ms/mfasetup and sign in.

You'll be asked to register more information. Select "Next".

2.

You should see a page titled "Keep your account secure".

Click "Next" until a QR code appears.

3.

You’ll see a QR code. Open the "Microsoft Authenticator" app on your smartphone.

If you're using the app for the first time, you may be able to click "Scan QR code" directly. Otherwise, tap the three dots in the upper corner, select "Add account", then "Work or school account".

Scan the QR code with your phone and click "Next" on the page.

4.

You'll receive a test notification on your phone. Approve it by tapping "Approve".

You may be asked for a phone number at the end. This is registered as a backup and it's important to fill it out.
