Multi-factor authentication

Most of us are familiar with electronic identification. We often use it to log in to online banks or other digital services. The two-factor authentication offered by Microsoft 365 is a similar activity, although the technology differs.

Objective

MFA aims to increase data, service user, and system safety for Reykjavík City. It requires user verification during sign-in to ensure City data doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

MFA helps, for instance, if a third-party gets your password. Instead of signing in as you, you'll get a notification in the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone. You can approve or deny the sign-in attempt.

How to get MFA

Follow these instructions to set up Microsoft Authenticator on your phone. Once set up, you can sign in to your email using the app.

MFA ensures the safety of Reykjavík City's data, service users, and systems.

Instructions for a new device

If you have a new phone and still have access to the old one, you can usually clone the old phone to the new one during setup. This transfers the authentication to the new phone.

If you've lost your phone, you'll need to reset your authentication. Follow the same steps as setting up MFA for the first time.
