Philosophy

The values of Laugasól are respect, diversity, and creativity

The main focus in the preschool's educational approach is free play, creative work, and environmental education. The preschool operates based on the philosophies of John Dewey and Caroline Pratt. Dewey emphasized the importance of creating a positive and supportive environment, with teachers serving as friendly mentors. He also stressed that children learn best through hands-on experiences, their own activities, and enthusiasm, rather than through direct instruction. Pratt based her philosophy on Dewey's advancement strategy and designed from it unit blocks used during play in Laugasól.

Preschool literacy

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City preschools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in early childhood education.

All Reykjavík City preschools have parent associations and parent councils.

The Center for Laugasól

Laugasól Preschool falls under North Center. North Center provides a wide range of services to the residents of Laugardalur and Háaleiti and is a comprehensive information source for municipal services. The Center provides welfare services, school services to preschool and primary schools, day care and recreational counseling, and various other services.

Child prosperity

The new Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties. Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity liaison in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity liaison offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services. Children, youth, and guardians can reach the school prosperity liaison to request integrated services.

Projects

The plan was to renovate and improve facilities at Laugasól and expand the school by converting the basement of the school building. This would add two divisions, bringing the school to nine divisions with a capacity of 190-200 children. That expansion was a part of the Bridging the Gap development initiative, which aims to bridge the gap between parental leave and preschool. The renovations were expected to be completed in 2025.

Interior demolition and cleanup began in May 2024. Windows were removed. Excavation around the building began to install new drainage and sewer lines. It was discovered that the building has no footings and that conventional drainage lines cannot be installed alongside it. Work was halted.

An engineering firm was brought in to assess the building's foundations and the fill material beneath it.

Significant foundation deficiencies have been identified, and it is not feasible to proceed with the project without further investigation.
