About the preschool

Drafnarsteinn is open from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In 2011, the preschools Drafnarborg and Dvergasteinn were merged into one operation under the same management. The preschool therefore has six groups in three buildings. In fall 2019, the buildings were divided by age, with children aged 1-3 in Drafnarborg and children aged 3-6 in Dvergasteinn. The divisions are called: Hlíð, Hóll, Ljúflingsholt, Hulduhólar, Álfheimar, and Trölladyngja.

At the preschool, we focus on creating a productive and imaginative atmosphere where children can have fun and learn from their own experiences and surroundings by using their curiosity and need for physical activity.We use the project "Amazing Adventures" (Ótrúleg eru ævintýrin) by Sigríður J. Þórisdóttir, which is based on McCracken's philosophy of "holistic learning".dstætt nám'. This philosophy serves as the foundation of our learning and work environment.

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City preschools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in early childhood education. All Reykjavík City preschools have parent associations and parent councils.

Support services

Reykjavík City employs a team of professionals who provide school support services for preschools and primary schools, counseling on child care and recreational activities, welfare services, and other specialized counseling and services needed to help all children actively participate in Reykjavík City's school and recreational activities and make their dreams come true.

Child prosperity

The new Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties. 

Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity liaison in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity liaison offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services. 

Children, young people, and guardians can reach the school prosperity liaison to request integrated services.
