Reykjavík City Beautification Awards

Every year, in conjunction with Reykjavík City's anniversary on August 18, recognition is given for thorough renovations of older houses, along with exemplary grounds belonging to service buildings, institutions, and multi-family housing. In addition to these, acknowledgments are also given for “summer streets", which means areas in front of shops and services that are pleasantly arranged during the summer.

Beautification Committee

The Reykjavík City Beautification Committee was appointed in May 1968. The following social organizations were represented on the Committee: The Architects' Association of Iceland, Housewives' Association of Reykjavík, Gardening Association of Iceland, and Reykjavík Homeowners' Association. Reykjavík City appointed to the Beautification Committee Hafliði Jónsson, horticultural manager of Reykjavík at the time, Gísli B. Björnsson, graphic designer, and Gunnar Helgason, City Councilor and the driving force behind the establishment of a beautification committee.

On the anniversary of Reykjavík City on August 18, 1968, the Beautification Committee chose Safamýri as the most beautiful street in the city for the first time. Many other streets in Reykjavík, such as Einimelur, Hvassaleiti, Kleifarvegur, and Sporðagrunnur, were also considered to contribute to the city's appearance.

Every year on the anniversary of the founding of Reykjavík, the Beautification Committee presents awards for beautiful houses and gardens in Reykjavík.
