Reykjavík traffic safety plan

Description of the action and objectives

Green Deal action

The plan supports the goal of a more walkable city and aims to reduce serious accidents and fatalities, with special emphasis on reducing accidents involving children. Reykjavík City is committed to adopting Vision Zero during the plan's term and serving as a model for other municipalities in traffic safety. The Vision Zero philosophy is based on the principle that no one should be seriously injured or killed in traffic accidents. Most serious accidents in Reykjavík involve people who are walking, cycling or traveling by other active means. The plan's implementation is therefore key to improving active transportation in the city. An update to the traffic safety plan will be completed in 2024. An information page will be launched on Reykjavík's website to detail the plan's goals and status, outlining actions underway to improve traffic safety in the city, such as reducing maximum speed limits.
