About the preschool

Heiðarborg is open from 7:30am to 5pm

Heiðarborg Preschool was founded in June 1990. It is located near Rauðavatn, Elliðaárdalur, and the stables in Víðidalur, and we enjoy spending time with these natural gems on walks and during outdoor studies. Heiðarborg has around 70 children attend at the same time in four divisions. The divisions Bali and Laut are for 3 to 6 year olds, Lund is for 2-3 year olds, and Brekka is for 12-24 month olds. There are about 20 employees.

In this very short video, we give a glimpse of the preschool activities.

Philosophy

The values of Heiðarborg are friendship, joy, and respect

The preschool follows theories of Howard Gardner on multiple intelligences and John Dewey. It is a "green school” (“skóli á grænni grein”) and therefore has a focus on environmental education. The preschool has a lot of musical activities and emphasizes physical activity. Providing children a safe environment is also a priority, as well as promoting their development, encouraging their creativity, and helping them strengthen their identities.

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City preschools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in preschool activities. All Reykjavík City preschools have parent associations and parent councils.

The Center for Heiðarborg

Heiðarborg Preschool falls under East Center. East Center provides a wide range of services to the residents of Árbær, Grafarholt, Grafarvogur, and Kjalarnes and is a comprehensive information source for municipal services. The Center provides welfare services, school services to preschool and primary schools, day care and recreational counseling, and various other services.

Child prosperity

The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties.

Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity contact in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity contact offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services.

Children, youth, and guardians can reach the school prosperity contact to request integrated services.
