Primary school meals

School meals are free for the 2024-2025 school year. However, the school still needs to track information about allergies and intolerances and limit food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.

Parents/guardians register for the school lunch program in the Skólamatur system and select which weekdays their children will eat. Students should choose the same weekdays each week, such as every Tuesday and/or every Thursday. More information is on the Skólamatur website.

About Hamraskóli

Hamraskóli started its operations in the fall of 1991 and now has about 203 students in grades 1 to 7. The school is a health-promoting school, and emphasis is placed on movement, joy, and the activity of students. The school puts considerable emphasis on fostering a friendly school community and encouraging positive and good interaction among students and staff. The school operates under a growth mindset, teaching students how to face challenges and view mistakes as opportunities to learn. Formative learning is a thread through the education of the students and should be reflected in all subjects, theoretical, and practical. The school operates a special division for autism, meant for children with an autism diagnosis. The school's motto is kindness, responsibility, and consideration. The school's future vision is to enhance formative learning within the school and to encourage students and staff to adopt a growth mindset.

Simbað After-School Program is for children in 1st to 4th grade at Hamraskóli, and Fjörgyn Youth Center offers a variety of fun activities for children and adolescents.

Child prosperity

The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties. Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity contact in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity contact offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services. Children, youth, and guardians can reach the school prosperity contact to request integrated services.

The contact person for Hamraskóli is: Helga Guðrún Guðjónsdóttir

Operational plan

What's ahead for Hamraskóli? You can find several items in the operational plan, including the school's policy for the previous year, teaching planning, and much more.

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City schools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in school activities. All schools in Reykjavík City have an active parent association.

School policy for parent cooperation

Good cooperation between homes and schools is one of the main prerequisites for the successful education of children. Hamraskóli staff emphasize that cooperation must be built on mutual trust and respect. Parental support plays a vital role in the school's operations, and parents are encouraged to actively participate. Special emphasis is placed on enhancing cooperation between parents and schools, working closely with the parent association and Hamraskóli staff. The development of a cooperation plan between schools and homes will be finalized with the goal of formalizing and improving collaboration.

Consultation meetings/parent meetings

Parents and students are invited twice a year for discussions with teachers, covering topics such as academic progress, student well-being, attendance, and social skills. Additional meeting times are available by arrangement. Parents and teachers may also exchange information via email.

Orientation meetings for parents

At the beginning of the school year, orientation meetings are held for parents. The meetings review, among other things, teaching approaches and other practical matters related to school work.

Parent association

All parents of students are members of Hamraskóli's Parent Association. The Association's goals include fostering positive cooperation between homes and schools and supporting the social life of students. Within each class, two class representatives are elected from among the parents, and their role is to promote greater cooperation between parents and students.

Hamraskóli school district

Nevertheless, all parents have the choice to apply to any school in the city for their children according to the rules on school districts, applications, and admission.
