Mayor's Neighborhood Days in Háaleiti and Bústaðir

Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir will visit city neighborhoods over the coming weeks and months.

During Neighborhood Days, the mayor will visit public schools and other city facilities, meet with local city staff, talk with residents and representatives from community organizations, sports clubs and parent associations, and host open events where people can discuss issues with her and senior city officials.

Neighborhood profile

Nearly 17,000 people live in the Háaleiti and Bústaðir neighborhood. Háaleiti is a place name, and Bústaðir was a farm that stood above the Elliðaár rivers. Within the neighborhood is Smáíbúðahverfið, which gets its name from the small houses people received help building during the housing shortage following World War II.

Fossvogsdalur valley sits at the heart of the neighborhood, where people go for all kinds of outdoor recreation, play and exercise. Activities include playing by the beautiful stream, biking, running and disc golf.

The district boasts ambitious school and community programs alongside excellent sports facilities. Fossvogsdalur is home to Víkin, Víkingur's training ground, though the club also has facilities in Safamýri.

Shopping and services thrive in the neighborhood, for example in Múlinn and Kringlan shopping center, which houses a Reykjavík City Library branch offering a wide variety of events. Next door is Reykjavík City Theater with its dynamic theatrical and cultural programming.

Schedule for the mayor's visit

During Neighborhood Days, Mayor Heiða Björg Hilmisdóttir will visit schools in the neighborhood. She will meet with representatives from the schools' parent associations and speak with school administrators and other staff members. She will also learn about other city activities in the neighborhood and meet with community organizations and sports club representatives.
