What is violence?

Violence is when someone hurts you.

Violence can be physical.
For example, hitting, kicking, pushing.

Violence can be emotional.
For example, threatening, controlling, humiliating.

Violence can be sexual.
For example, sexual contact that you don't want.

Violence is never your fault.

Violence

People who experience violence are called victims.

Victims can be women.

They can also be men.

They can also be non-binary adults.

Women are usually the victims.

People who commit violence can be women.

They can also be men.

They can also be non-binary adults.

Sometimes people aren't sure if they've experienced violence.

It's important to talk with a friend.
Or a specialist.

No one should have to endure violence.

Violence violates human rights.

Violence violates people's freedom.

Everyone has the right to seek help.

Abuse is never the fault of the victim!

The Women’s Shelter (Kvennaathvarfið)

The shelter helps women and their children.

When they can't stay home because of violence.

The violence can be emotional.
Or physical.

The violence can come from a spouse.
Or others who live in the home.

The shelter is also for women who have been raped.
