Steinahlíð

About the preschool

Steinahlíð is open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm

Steinahlíð has had a preschool since 1949, making it one of the oldest preschools in Reykjavík. The house was built in 1932 but given to the child welfare society Barnavinafélagið Sumargjöf in 1949. The couple Elly Schepler Eiríksson and Halldór Eiríksson donated the house, wishing that children would learn to appreciate and cultivate their relationship with nature, with an emphasis on growing trees and vegetables. Outdoor activities and environmental education are, therefore, important components of Steinahlíð's work. Steinahlíð has 55 children at the same time in three groups. The groups are called Laut, Kjarr, and Hlíð.

Philosophy

The motto of Steinahlíð is respect, well-being, and creativity

Play is at the heart of all educational activities at the preschool, whether spontaneous or organized. Play is an integral part of children's life and work, fostering their comprehensive development. At Steinahlíð, we emphasize environmental education and outdoor activities, as the unique feature of our location is the large and beautiful garden we have access to. When planning our work we therefore often try to connect nature to our projects. Steinahlíð is a Green Flag preschool.

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City preschools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in preschool activities. All Reykjavík City preschools have parent associations and parent councils.

The Center for Steinahlíð

Steinahlíð Preschool falls under North Center. North Center provides a wide range of services to the residents of Laugardalur and Háaleiti and is a comprehensive information source for municipal services. The Center provides welfare services, school services to preschool and primary schools, day care and recreational counseling, and various other services.

Child prosperity

The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties.

Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity contact in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity contact offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services.

Children, youth, and guardians can reach the school prosperity contact to request integrated services.
