About Hagaskóli

Hagaskóli's school district encompasses all of Vesturbær, from the airport and Lækjargata to Seltjarnarnes. The double-session schedule ended in 1976 making it possible to work under normal conditions at Hagaskóli. In addition to area residents, the school has consistently attracted a large number of students from outside the district.

Hagaskóli holds a unique position among Reykjavík schools as a single, large consolidated school serving only lower secondary education, that is 8th, 9th and 10th grade. Hagaskóli receives students from three schools: Grandaskóli, Melaskóli, and Vesturbæjarskóli. As a result, classes are fairly large, and for the 2023–2024 school year, there will be over 600 students attending the school. This high student count enables the school to offer a diverse range of learning opportunities.

Frosti youth center is for the school's students and provides a variety of entertaining activities for adolescents.

The school has had five principals since its establishment:

  • Árni Þórðarson 1958–1967
  • Björn Jónsson 1967–1994
  • Einar Magnússon 1994–2007
  • S. Ingibjörg Jósefsdóttir 2007–2023
  • Ómar Örn Magnússon 2023–

Child prosperity

The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties. Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity contact in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity contact offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services. Children, youth, and guardians can reach the school prosperity contact to request integrated services.

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City schools make targeted efforts to consult with and increase parent involvement in school activities. All schools in Reykjavík City have an active parent association.

Hagaskóli has an active parent association as per the Compulsory School Act. The board of the parent association is usually elected at its general meeting at the start of the school year. Among other things, the parent association's board is responsible for electing representatives to the school council. The parent association fulfills various roles, including providing educational opportunities for parents at the school, organizing the spring trip for 10th-grade students, and more.

The school principal is in charge of establishing the parent association and ensures that the association receives the support it needs. The role of the parent association is to enhance the school's efforts, foster student well-being, and reinforce connections between home and school.

Each school's parent association defines its own rules of operation, including the election process for its board and the selection of representatives to the school council.

The parent association of Hagaskóli meets regularly on school premises.

While the parent association doesn't have a specific project schedule for the school year, it is responsible for activities such as planning and coordinating the Parent Patrol, orchestrating the 10th-grade spring trip, and handling various other assignments.

Goals:

  • Support the school's educational efforts
  • Promote the welfare of the students
  • Reinforce the connection between homes and schools
  • Encourage active guardian participation in school activities
  • Advocate for, preserve, and oversee the quality of the school's work

The board of the parent association creates a project schedule for each year, publishing it on the school's website when ready. Names and email addresses will be recorded after the parent association's general meeting in the fall.

Home and School have issued handbooks for parent representatives at all educational stages. These outline the roles and responsibilities of parent associations and school councils.

Members of the Board of Hagaskóli's Parent Association:

  • Gróa Helga Eggertsdóttir, Secretary
  • Guðný Arndís Óskarsdóttir

School council

Hagaskóli School Council

A school council that serves as a forum for consultation between the principal and the school community on the school operation. According to Article 8 of the Compulsory School Act No. 91/2008, every primary school must have an active school council.

The school council participates in shaping policy for the school and defining its unique character. The Council shall be composed of nine individuals for terms of two years each: two teacher representatives, one other staff representative, two student representatives, and two parent representatives, along with the school principal who directs the School Council's activities and is responsible for its establishment.

The School Council discusses the school's curriculum, annual operational plan, operational schedule, and other plans related to school operations before final decisions are made. The operational plan includes four scheduled School Council meetings. However, if matters arise that are deemed necessary to discuss, the Council may convene additional meetings.
